Meter or metre?

Ok, this might sound silly but I don't know which is right, meter or metre?

I've tried using spell check and it's always different in programs. Why is it that some say meter is wrong and then other times metre is the wrong one?

Can an English tutor or anybody tell me because it's driving me insane.

In Australian/UK English, 'metre' for the unit of distance. 'Meter' as in electricity meter and thermometer.
